My word, that’s a lot of glass. The windshield doesn’t stop at the cowl, it keeps going all the way past the front axle despite the car’s silhouette featuring a long dash-to-axle ratio. The result is an incredibly strange greenhouse that makes this four-door sedan seem inspired by Bertone’s outlandish Lancia Stratos Zero. How bizarre is that? The strangeness continues with giant fins off the front fenders that are more than slightly reminiscent of the fourth-generation Chevrolet Camaro....

This 911 has been customized to be like a period-correct safari/off-road machine, complete with an unashamed ’70s color palette and glorious stripes and all the fun stuff like roll cages and plenty of lights and big tires. But I want to point out this little bit of graphic design on the sides: I love how the word Safari is made only with what’s not there; it’s cut out of the stripes on the side, with just a few edges delineated in white, just four squiggles to help guide your imagination to see what isn’t, yet is, there....

Which makes sense, as the target demographic thinks Fox when they nostalgically think Mustang....

Last week we had a chat with Bring A Trailer Co-Founder Randy Nonnenberg on our podcast. In it, Randy, Beau, Jason, and David talked about the coolest vehicles to ever roll across the virtual Bring a Trailer auction floor. One of them was an epic 1972 Ford Condor II motorhome that once belonged to McLaren Engines chairman and CEO of McLaren Racing Zak Brown. The RV itself is pretty cool, or baller, as the kids would say....

First, the news. At the risk of propagating nagging (but, admittedly pretty accurate) stereotypes of the prairie, it was incredibly windy in Sterling last week. Kudos to the commercial drivers who kept goods and people on the move in high-profile vehicles, fighting the crosswinds all week long, having to spend hours upon hours executing airplane-like slip maneuvers just to keep their trucks moving straight ahead. Here’s what the wind did to me last Thursday in my Sprinter on the way back from Scranton, Kansas where I bought a set of used tires....

I think Hahn’s most impactful and best-known work came from an extremely important decision Hahn made after becoming president of Volkswagen of America in 1959. VW’s lineup at that time was something very peculiar to American eyes: diminutive cars with the engine in the wrong end of the car, making funny noises and shaped like either like a mechanical igloo or a rolling loaf of bread. Hahn needed to make the many positive qualities of these cars appealing to the masses of American buyers, who were used to being shown flash ads of cars as idealized dream-chariots, long and low and gleaming....

From modern eyes, it’s hard not to assume that the MG-owning lady there is sitting, barefoot, in front of her fun little car because the damn thing won’t start. Probably a Lucas Electrics switch that melted itself into a plastic-and-aluminum pendant, or something. But there she is, stuck in what looks to be a giant sandbox. Sorry, lady. Hope you can get that thing started. I threaten to convert it to an electric drivetrain sometimes and it behaves for a while....

Somehow, I think Land Rover did it wrong. I’ve never seen a more cluttered, busy, and downright chaotic dock seen in a car brochure than this one, with its riot of rigging in the back there, the green-hulled HMS Eminent glowering back there impatiently, and even the wood texture of the dock asserting itself visually, all wrinkly and gnarled. It’s all kind of unsettling to look at. Who okayed this?...

Yeah, I had a feeling that would be the case. If it weren’t for fifteen seasons of chasing down evil beasties, an old Chevy sedan like this would be a parts car. And it’s still not worth $7500; the show wasn’t that popular. Today, we’re looking at a couple of sporty sedans, one from Italy and one from England, both with manual gearboxes and famous engines. Neither one is exactly known as a paragon of reliability, but both have the potential to make you the talk of any Cars & Coffee event you can manage to limp them to....

Maybe the hardware store was out of white paint, or something. Now: Former Ford and later Chrysler boss Lido A. “Lee” Iacocca needs no introduction. He was an industry giant, with a keen sense of the market, and his instincts were rarely wrong....

The Niva Classic ’22 looks like Nivas have looked for, well, decades, but there’s less there than meets the eye. Niva production was forced to stop due to economic sanctions back in March, as a number of key imported components were no longer available. Components like Bosch ABS brake systems and Russia’s version of satellite accident-location and alert systems and any kind of radio head unit or even speakers. You still get power steering, power windows up front, and, um, that’s about it....

Let’s start with the most contentious subscription option, remote start. What was once a simple fob-to-car function to warm up the engine from the comfort of your home or workplace or grocery store is now sold for $10 a month, $105 a year, $250 for three years, and $330 as a one-time fee. Notice the careful wording that this isn’t a lifetime subscription – 4G cellular service will eventually sunset just like 3G did, potentially leaving third- and fourth-owners in the lurch....

Close one, as expected. But it looks like the Ford has the edge this time. I’d have trouble making this call, but since the Ford is local to me, I guess it wins by default. Now, before we get started today, I need to make an announcement: This will be my last Shitbox Showdown for a while.
